Character Name: Alexander Lightwood
Age: 18
Canon: The Mortal Instruments
Canon Point: The end of City of Heavenly Fire
Character Information: Wiki here.
Personality:
Alec’s parabatai (simply put, his hunting partner) is head-strong, cocky, and sexually suggestive. Alec is the perfect foil: he is self-conscious, horribly and dangerously blunt, and more than content to rest in Jace’s shadow. He takes his role as a Shadowhunter very seriously; after being raised by incredibly strict parents, it’s not so surprising that he tries to follow the Law so closely – and is usually the first one to complain if the Law is broken.
That's how he used to be, at least, until he realized that some Laws are outdated. Not that they were made to be broken, but in the end, he's a teenager -- he gets impatient with the adults' obsession with talking and discussing things over and over before they act.
Of course, his complaints are heard a lot less when the Law gets in the way of the role he’s taken upon himself. Alec is the guardian of his Shadowhunter group; Jace admits to Clary in City of Bones that Alec never manages to kill demons because he’s so busy making sure Jace and Isabelle aren’t getting killed. He takes the brunt of a lot of assaults, and gets hurt all the more often for it. And still, Alec wouldn’t change a damn thing about it.
To people who have just met him, he appears cut-off, quiet, a boy with jagged edges. He sees himself as being more adult than his sister, who is only two years younger than him. At eighteen, a Shadowhunter is considered a legal adult; combined with his natural tendency to act as a guardian, he has moments where he revels in his authority and takes on a bossy air. Usually no one pays attention to it.
Isabelle claims to Clary that Alec rarely makes speeches unless they’re important. For the most part, Alec doesn’t waste his words. In all of the books, he is constantly the one relaying information as he is very concise, and mostly no-nonsense. He respects authority and, as long as the idea isn’t completely stupid, is fine with content with being a follower instead of the leader.
Not to say that Alec is completely humorless, but Clary notes that he finds odd things funny, and only usually casts off sarcastic comments when he’s irritated or so deep in shit there’s no way to drag himself out. This is combined with a somewhat dark mischeviousness, such as when he purposely destroyed vampire motorcycles in City of Bones just to piss them off.
A large part of Alec’s closed-off nature comes from the fact that he is homosexual. While it doesn’t seem like a big deal to a mundane like Simon, being a gay Shadowhunter is extremely dangerous – normally, gay Shadowhunters are shunned and seen as unnatural, almost on the same level as Downworlders. While Alec was growing up alongside Jace, he grew extremely attached to him, even falling in love with him. However, because of the stigma attached (it's wrong to be gay, but it's even worse to fall in love with your parabatai), he kept his feelings to himself. It is only when he meets Magnus Bane – the first and only man to actively flirt with him – he starts to slowly come out of his shell. As he gradually falls in love with the warlock, he accepts that being gay is part of who he is and eventually comes out to his parents and various other Shadowhunters.
As part of Shadowhunter culture, Alec is extremely close to his family and loyal nearly to a fault. He is extremely protective of Isabelle and Jace, whether in or out of combat, and that same loyalty extends to Clary, Simon, and Magnus. He is easily guilted by those he loves, and he always tries to do the right thing – even if that means doing something selfish for the good of another.
Being a teenager who is still at odds with his sexuality – Clary describes Alec as being “uncomfortable in his own skin” – it’s no surprise that Alec has an extremely scathing jealous side. Until he discovers the history behind one of Magnus’s previous relationships, Alec seems to be growing steadily more confident. However, this little tidbit makes him shrink back into himself, re-examining his relationship with the man. Alec questions his worth and his importance in others’ lives, even as he is willing to sacrifice himself for them.
His jealousy fuels his newly-acquired fear of mortality. Being a Shadowhunter and literally raised to be a soldier, he has accepted death as a natural and nearly inevitable part of his life. However, it is trying to swallow the idea of Magnus living on forever as an immortal and him growing old and withering away before him that shakes his very core. Alec finds it impossible to consolidate his acceptance of death with his fear of it, and he continues to struggle with the thought of aging constantly.
In the last book, it's safe to say he is one of the characters with the most growth. City of Heavenly Fire shows us an Alec who scathes, who comes to term with who he is and what he wants. He goes on a journey to save Magnus because it's the right thing to do, not because he thinks Magnus will get back together with him. He undergoes the selfishness of his friends as they commune with their lovers while he fights to find Magnus, and he learns not to hide his irritation or his pain. By the end of the book, he's had a moment of self-realization: he won't get back into a relationship where there's not an equal power balance. While it's hard to say all of his self-esteem issues have evaporated, they are slowly drying up.
5-10 Key Character Traits: Selfless, sarcastic, loyal, loving, cautious, protective, jealous, insecure, empathetic.
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, or EITHER? Either!
Opt-Outs: Minotaur, troll, goblin, demon, werewolf.
Roleplay Sample: A thread here.
